Obamacare premiums are skyrocketing and the deductibles (the amount you have to pay before you even use your insurance) were so high that saying “I have insurance” was almost a lie. For a family of four on the bronze plan on average could buy a new car every year before they even used their insurance (I’m not joking, the deductible alone is over $12K and the premiums could easily equal $2K a year and a Kia Rio costs $14,370 according to motortrend.com). This isn’t affordable coverage, at best it’s all a parlor trick to tell people that they have health coverage.
For years Democrats and Republicans have debated the merits of Obamacare and whether or not government should be involved in healthcare. It is ironic now to see Democrats so upset about what Republicans are doing with their “repeal and replace” plan since that is part and parcel of what you get when the government is involved in healthcare, maybe we can get some of these Democrats to demand less government intrusion after all. The reality is that Obamacare is on the verge of insolvency, and the Republican plan isn’t going to change that socialized healthcare is not the best answer for getting people the healthcare they need.
One large problem is that people don’t understand that health coverage does not equal healthcare. You don’t need insurance to be seen by a doctor, you just have to pay the bill when you get it, and I’m not sure with such high deductibles how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) made this any different. The other common point we hear is that people are “going to die” because of reforms to the ACA, I’m not sure how someone arrives at that logic since passing the ACA was never on the basis of a large mass of deaths due to substandard care, in fact, we have consistently been at the forefront for healthcare in the world, but it sounds really good as a soundbite. The reality is that Democrats are married to the ACA and Republicans have the option of completely washing their hands of the mess.
My proposal for Republicans is this. We voted against the ACA when we gave the House and Senate to Republicans in 2010 and 2012. The Republicans need to lean to their more conservative and basic Republican principles when finishing the draft of the American Healthcare Act (AHCA). Consult the freedom caucus and put every government reducing, citizen mandate, and bloated bureaucratic garbage out and let the Democrats call you every name in the book AND let your legislation fail.
Once the AHCA fails Democrats will celebrate their “moral” victory. They will tell the American people how great it was that they fought against such awful legislation and Obamacare is here to stay. Then you LET IT FAIL. The Republicans in 2018 can talk about how they tried to negotiate and Democrats refused, they tried to fix the problems and Democrats obstructed, and now Obamacare is a smoldering pile of garbage, but Republicans have a plan in place to open the market across state lines and give insurance back to the private sector where it belonged in the first place.
